  • EMR, sleep and diabetes

For more than a decade there’s been convincing evidence that exposure to electromagnetic radiation changes brain wave patterns during sleep. Now there’s evidence that such changes can be linked to diabetes. A study published in the January issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science in the US has found that depression of slow-wave sleep affects insulin production and increases risk of diabetes.
  • BioInitiative report (2007)

A collaboration of international scientists has identified health problems from low levels of EMR from electrical and communications technology. Exposure to even everyday levels of radiation from electrical and communications technologies can have harmful effects on the body — and international standards are inadequate to protect public health. These are among the conclusions of the report of the BioInitiative Working Group released in late August.
  • WiFi in schools

Carmarthenshire County Council in Wales has voted to draw up a code of practice on the use of WiFi in schools. The council admitted to being “very concerned” about potential effects.
  • The mobile phone personality

Do you use your mobile phone while you drive? Do you play games on it? Are you addicted to your phone? The way we use our mobile phones is a reflection of our personalities, says Jim Phillips, a researcher from Australia’s Monash University. In a study published late last year, Phillips analysed the connection between mobile phone use and personality traits of 112 volunteers.
  • SCENIHR Report

The European Commission has just released a report on the “Possible effects of Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) on Human Health.” After reviewing recent studies, the authors find limited evidence of risk but recommend further research. For radiofrequency radiation from communications technology, the report concludes that there is no consistent evidence of health problems.
  • Doctors warn about health risks

Eleven Canadian doctors have petitioned Norfolk County Council regarding the dangers of mobile phone towers. In a letter to the Mayor dated 2 April, the doctors urged the council to press for the relocation of a phone tower situated near a primary school. “There is an increasing body of evidence linking the Radio Frequency Radiation emitted from cell phone towers to serious health effects including cancers and childhood leukemia.
  • Benevento Resolution

A meeting of international scientists has endorsed a statement recognising risks from EMR and endorsing a precautionary approach. Exposure to electromagnetic fields can increase cancer risks in children and health problems in adults, and mobile phone raidaiton may contribute to brain tumours. These are among the effects identified by a group of international scientists in a statement known as the Benevento Resolution.
  • Phone driving like drink driving

Using a mobile phone while driving has been shown to be as dangerous as drink driving. People who use a mobile phone while driving have slower reaction times and a greater risk of accidents, according to a new study from the Utah University in the US. “We found that people are as impaired when the drive and talk on a cell phone as they are when they drive intoxicated at the legal blood-alcohol limit,” says Frank Drews, one of the study’s authors, an assistant professor of psychology.
  • Cordless phone recommendations

A German government agency has issued a warning about the use of cordless (DECT) phones. According to current scientific knowledge nationally and internationally, there are indications for biological effects of high frequency electromagnetic fields which are the means of transmission for DECT phones”, said the Federal Agency for Radiation Protection (BfS) in a press release of 31 January.
  • E-Smog and depression

Environmental levels of electromagnetic radiation may affect mental health. This is the finding of a new Australian study on the connection between suicide and geomagnetic storms. Professor Michael Berk from the University of Melbourne, analysed the incidence of geomagnetic storms caused by solar flares and suicide rates between 1968 and 2002.
  • Wireless and sleep problems

Radiofrequency radiation affected sleep quality in an exposed population, according to a new study from Switzerland. T Abelin and colleagues conducted two surveys on the population surrounding the Swiss radiotransmitter at Schwarzenburg when it was both operational and not operational. Information for the study came from surveys of 400 adults living near the transmitter and 2621 measurements of magnetic fields in 56 locations.
  • Mobiles and epilepsy

A study from Spain casts new light onto the risk of mobile phone radiation for epileptics. E Lopez-Martin and team tested three groups of rats. One group was exposed to a GSM mobile phone signal of 900 MHz for two hours; one was exposed to the same radiation and a chemical which rendered them prone to seizures; the third was exposed only to the chemical. The researchers found that the seizure prone rats, when irradiated, suffered seizures
