The results of a ten-year research project by the US National Toxicology Program (NTP) have shown that mobile phone radiation increased cancer rates in animals. The program was undertaken to test the idea that mobile phone radiation did not cause health problems. The reverse was, in fact, found. The scientists exposed rats to radiation from GSM and CDMA mobile phones over a two-year period.

ELF fields (from electrical sources) Cancer Magnetic fields can promote cancer, according to a major new study from Italy. Researchers exposed 650 rats to a magnetic field of 200 or 10,000 mG, from before birth, for their entire lives and exposed them to a single dose of ionizing radiation when they were 6 weeks of age. The exposed rats had increased rates of mammary gland (breast) cancers, schwannomas of the heart and leukemia/lymphoma.

Professor Dariusz Leszczynski has two doctorates and a docentship in biochemistry, was Research Professor and Head of the Radiation Biology Laboratory at the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) in Finland and spent 18 years conducting experimental work on electromagnetic fields and health. He was a member of the IARC Working Group that classified radiofrequency radiation a class 2B carcinogen.

EHS hearing On 4 November, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), a consultative body of the European Union, held a public hearing in Belgium to debate how the EU should deal with the issue of electromagnetic hypersensitivity and to give input for the EESC's opinion that is scheduled for adoption in January 2015. A collaboration of international scientists has identified health problems from low levels of EMR from electrical and communications technology. Exposure to even everyday levels of radiation from electrical and communications technologies can have harmful effects on the body — and international standards are inadequate to protect public health. These are among the conclusions of the report of the BioInitiative Working Group released in late August.

Eleven Canadian doctors have petitioned Norfolk County Council regarding the dangers of mobile phone towers. In a letter to the Mayor dated 2 April, the doctors urged the council to press for the relocation of a phone tower situated near a primary school. “There is an increasing body of evidence linking the Radio Frequency Radiation emitted from cell phone towers to serious health effects including cancers and childhood leukemia.

A meeting of international scientists has endorsed a statement recognising risks from EMR and endorsing a precautionary approach. Exposure to electromagnetic fields can increase cancer risks in children and health problems in adults, and mobile phone raidaiton may contribute to brain tumours. These are among the effects identified by a group of international scientists in a statement known as the Benevento Resolution.

While a new study from Europe indicates that analogue phones increase the risk of brain tumours, Australian researchers show how this effect may occur. Suggestions that mobile phones cause brain cancer have been touted now for nearly a decade. The issue was catapulted to public attention in 1993 when heavy mobile phone user, Suzie Reynard, died from a tumour she claimed was caused by her mobile phone and which was adjacent to the position of her phone antenna.

Two reviews have concluded that electromagnetic fields from the power system may present a risk to public health. For more than twenty years the question of whether electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from the power system contribute to health problems has been debated throughout the western world. For most of that time the fields of opinion have been polarised (if you’ll excuse the pun).

Do the toxic particles contained in plastic wrap migrate into food being cooked in a microwave oven? Eighteen year old student Claire Nelson examined this question for a high school project. She covered virgin olive oil with four types of plastic wrap and microwaved each combination. Nelson found that suspected carcinogen di(ethylhexyl) adequate (or DEHA) seeped into the food, contaminating it at 200 to 500 parts per million (compared to the US standard of 0.05 parts per billion).
