Cell Phones Distracting Students in Class, District Says

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A math teacher for Hillsborough County Public Schools had her students give up their phones for 30 minutes to prove how many disruptions they can cause in class.

The teacher had her 23 students put their phones in the corner of their desks, according to a Facebook post from the district. Every time a student received a text or notification, she had them put a tally mark on the dry-erase board.

In 30 minutes, the district said the students received 268 disruptions: 58 texts, 182 social-media notifications and 28 other notifications.
