Electromagnetic hypersensitivity
Can people really become hypersensitive to electromagnetic exposures?
Yes, they can, says Professor Dominique Belpomme and team, writing in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. They believe electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) is a real and verifiable condition and should be acknowledged as such.
The authors point out that there is adequate clinical evidence to establish that EHS is ‘a distinct neuropathological disorder’ and they want to see it classified in the WHO International Classification of Diseases.
By clinical research, they mean biological markers that can be objectively observed and measured in patients. ‘These have now been shown to primarily involve low-grade inflammation, oxidative/nitrosative stress and, consequently, blood-brain barrier opening,’ they say. Clinical evidence is commonly used to diagnose diseases like cancer, diabetes type 2, cardiac problems and Alzheimer’s Disease, for example.
Belpomme points out that, while clinical research describes a condition, it doesn’t prove what causes it. Take cancer, for example. Laboratory tests define it, whereas it’s the population studies that show it’s linked with smoking, asbestos and so on.
In the case of EHS, early research looked for a link between exposure and symptoms to determine whether the one caused the other. It wasn’t always successful and that led some critics to conclude that EHS isn’t real.
Belpomme points out the problems with that sort of logic. ‘EHS first should have been objectively defined as a distinct pathological disorder thanks to the use of critical and rigorous methods of clinical research ….rather than attempting to search for EMF-related causality before EHS was objectively defined.’
Now that the markers for EHS have been clinically defined, could this condition be caused by electromagnetic exposures?
Belpomme suggests that they could. He hypothesizes that ‘EHS and MCS [Multiple chemical Sensitivity] are pathological disorders of the brain, as has been suggested by imaging techniques, and that under the general term “environmental stressors”, environmental EMFs and/or chemicals may be causally involved in their pathogenesis, as suggested by in vitro experimental and clinical data.’
Nevertheless, the identification of clinical markers means that EHS and MCS can be both diagnosed and treated—and that’s good news for sufferers.

Is 5G harmful for health?
To answer that question, Dr Fiorella Belpoggi reviewed the relevant scientific evidence for the European Parliament in a recent publication called the ‘Current state of knowledge of 5G-related carcinogenic and reproductive/developmental hazards’.1
Dr Belpoggi is Head of Research at the Ramazzini Institute and researches environmental carcinogens. She was involved in the large, ten-year animal study that investigated the effects of mobile phone radiation on rats and that found increased rates of heart tumours, rare schwannomas of the heart and brain tumours.2
Dr Belpoggi’s recent review included research that has been conducted on the lower 5G frequencies—those that have been used for earlier generations of technology and are being reused for 5G—as well as the higher 5G frequencies that have not previously been used for telecommunications. She pointed out that the International Agency for Research on Cancer has already ‘defined RF-EMF in the frequency range from 30 kHz to 300 GHz as “possibly carcinogenic” to humans.’
In her review, Belpoggi considered a total of over seven thousand studies on the relationship between wireless radiation and cancer or reproduction. From these, she determined how strong the evidence was for effects on humans and animals.
Conclusions
She concluded that, for frequencies between 450 MHz and 6 GHz—that is those being used currently—there is:
‘limited evidence’ that wireless radiation is carcinogenic to humans—but pointed out ‘positive associations’ between mobile phone radiation and glioma brain tumours and acoustic neuromas;
‘sufficient evidence’ that wireless radiation is carcinogenic to experimental animals;
‘sufficient evidence’ that wireless radiation adversely affects male fertility; ’limited evidence’ it adversely affects female fertility; and ‘limited evidence that it adversely affects the development of children whose mothers who were heavy mobile phone users during pregnancy;
‘sufficient evidence’ that it adversely affects fertility in male rodents; ‘limited evidence’ it adversely affects fertility in female rodents; ‘limited evidence of harmful effects on rodents born to female rodents exposed during pregnancy.
Dr Belpoggi concluded, ‘we can say that RF-EMF at FR1 frequencies [450 MHz to 6 GHz] exposure probably cause cancer, and in particular gliomas and acoustic neuromas in humans. ‘These frequencies clearly affect male fertility. These frequencies possibly affect female fertility. They possibly have adverse effects on the development of embryos, foetuses and newborns.’
She said that at higher frequencies, there are no adequate studies from which to draw conclusions. ‘Implementing MMW [millimetre wave] 5G technology without further preventive studies would mean conducting an “experiment” on the human population in complete uncertainty as to the consequences,’ the report said.
Recommendations
As a result of her observations, Dr Belpoggi recommend the following policy options:
developing mobile phone technologies that reduce people’s exposure to wireless radiation
revising radiation standards to reduce radiation from mobile phone towers
reducing radiation exposure—for example, by using fibre optic cables and having radiation-free public spaces
investigating the long-term health effects of 5G
and educating people about relevant technologies.
‘We could use optic fibre cables to connect schools, libraries, workplaces, houses, public buildings, all new buildings etc,’ she said.

Take the covid lockdown, add wireless radiation and our declining bee populations and what do you have?
You have an unprecedented opportunity.
For years there’s been evidence that wireless radiation has harmful effects on bees and other insects. We posted a blog about how harmful it is to insects this earlier this year and have reprinted an article about its effects on bees below.
As well as this, we know that wireless radiation creates a stress response in the body, activating the heat shock protein (stress) response in cells, and that it’s commonly linked with anxiety.
Here’s something simple you can do about both these problems – while creating something beautiful in the process – and lockdown may be just the opportunity for it.
Verge gardens.
This week’s picture shows a verge garden that was built during last year’s lockdown. It’s full of grevilleas, banksias, lavender, gazanias, geraniums and an assortment of other species that will burst into flower in spring.
There are so many other beautiful verge gardens in our area and we’ll be posting pictures of them on social media in the coming week. We’d love to see yours, too.
Creating a verge garden is an antidote to stress and a great way to support our struggling bee populations. And they’re a source of beauty, too.

Wireless radiation and bees
High frequency radiation could have a damaging effect on bees, according to a paper published in Nature.
Arno Thielens and team were interested to see how much power the Western Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera) would absorb at different frequencies. These bees are extremely important insects because of the environmental and economic benefits they provide as pollinators. Like all living creatures, they are affected by the heating caused by electromagnetic fields, the authors say.
As well as taking measurements at beehives in Belgium, the authors developed models of several different types of bees—two workers, a drone, a larva and a queen bee—and used these to calculate radiation absorption at frequencies from 0.6 GHz to 120 GHz.
The authors found that exposing bees ‘to frequencies higher than 3GHz—without changing the incident field strength—would result in relative increases in absorbed power between a factors 24-48’.

Wireless radiation and the nervous system
Can wireless radiation affect a person’s nervous system?
According to Professor Lebrecht von Klitzing, who has worked extensively with people with electromagnetic hypersensitivity, the answer is YES.
In a trial he conducted recently, he found that the nervous system could be impacted by radiation from WLAN (wireless local area network) sources.
Von Klitzing performed electromyograms (EMG) on three volunteers. EMG is a standard test that identifies how well muscles respond to brain signals via nerves using electrodes placed on the lower arm. The test produces a graph, similar to that produced by an electrocardiogram (ECG).
Each test was conducted in a shielded laboratory so that no extraneous radiofrequency signals could interfere with the results.
During the test, EMGs were conducted with a WLAN router in the laboratory turned ON and OFF and recordings were taken before, during and after exposure.
The results showed that the EMG readings during and after exposure were different to those before exposure. In other words, the WLAN signal affected the volunteer’s nervous system and the effects persisted beyond exposure.
According to von Klitzing, the results indicate the importance of society engaging in ‘a new discussion about healthy effects by low-energetic electromagnetic exposures.’

Butler conducted an ethical risk analysis (eRA) to ‘help foster an understanding of how historical guidelines were arrived at and why they remain immutable to change.’
Among his many observation is the fact that wireless radiation causes oxidative stress which can cause cancer, genetic damage, neurodegenerative diseases and a range of symptoms that are consistent with those that many people report after exposure.
He concluded, ‘The study finds potentially unethical behaviour in a variety of institutional and organisational actors, the consequence of which is a significant risk to the health and wellbeing of adults and children.’

WHO EMF Project preparation of the review of the science related to health effects of RF-EMF is severely delayed. It was planned to happen after the publication of the Interphone study, at the time when Mike Repacholi was still head of the EMF Project. It means that there is currently some 10 years delay. The work on currently ongoing systematic reviews begun in 2018. Now, in the end of 2020 the first paper describing process of selection of health effects for the systematic reviews has come out.

]]>A new petition calls on the Victorian government to give Victorians the right to have radiofrequency communications deactivated on an installed smart meter, particularly people with health issues who have obtained a medical certificate requesting this accommodation.
This would bring Victoria in line with other Australian states which have not mandated wireless electricity meters.
