What’s happening to your sperm?
April 12, 2025
If you’re interested in sperm and testicular health, here’s news for you.
Scientists from China have shown that mobile phone radiation can damage sperm and testicular tissues, raising questions about its impact on fertility.
The researchers exposed 80 rats to 1.5 GHz signals, 4.3 GHz signals or 1.5 plus 4.3 GHz signals for 15 minutes. These frequencies were chosen because they are often used in 4G and 5G mobile phones.
They found that exposure:
- changed sperm motility
- increased sperm malformation
- reduced levels of testosterone and other hormones
- altered testicular tissues (degeneration of spermatogenic cells, damaged testicular spermatogenic epithelium)
- caused ultrastructural injury
- increased oxidative stress
- and decreased energy-metabolising enzymes.
A partial recovery was observed on the 14th day after exposure.
‘In summary, 1.5 GHz and 4.3 GHz microwaves could harm the male reproductive system, affecting testicular architecture, sperm morphology and viability, as well as hormone levels,’ the authors said.
What was it about the exposure that caused the damage?
The study’s findings ‘suggest that exposure to microwave radiation may alter mitochondrial oxidative respiration,’ the authors say. ‘In conclusion, oxidative stress and impaired energy metabolism are interconnected, adversely affecting the male reproductive system following microwave exposure.’
The authors explain the particular vulnerability of the male reproductive organs. They say that ‘Testicular tissues are more vulnerable to electromagnetic radiation resulting in a higher Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) because the testicles are protected by only one layer of the scrotum, which offers less shielding than other internal organs.’
