Have you ever wondered how many transmitters around the world emit man-made electromagnetic fields?

Each power line and mobile phone tower is a transmitter. So is each mobile and cordless phone; each wireless modem and baby monitor; each smart watch, computer and tablet. The number, if we could know it, would be staggering.

Writing in the journal Applied Sciences, Ganna Nevoit and team have shown us that every living organism – from single-celled creatures to fish and plants, to animals and humans – emit electromagnetic fields. So does the Earth, itself.

Moreover, they say that life itself depends on the electromagnetic fields of the Earth.

So, what happens when we introduce billions upon billions of devices transmitting artificial electromagnetic fields and changing the electromagnetic environment of the planet?

‘Anthropogenic electromagnetic radiation has fundamental differences from the natural electromagnetic background of the Earth and has a proven negative impact on the human body,’ the authors say. This is because it has different characteristics (polarization, coherence, oscillation and variable intensity) to natural radiation.

It is inevitable that there will be impacts.

The authors hypothesise that one way that man-made fields affect the human body is because they interfere with the body’s natural communications system which operates at similar frequencies. They suggest this radiation ‘influences the functional state of cells by interfering with endogenous electromagnetic processes of energy and information transfer/biophoton signaling of their metabolism and vital functions.’

In other words, the cells and systems of our body talk to one another in the RF wavelengths.

According to the authors, ‘[m]odern scientific data suggest that living organisms and humans synchronize with external electromagnetic fields. The phenomenon of synchronization of processes is recognized as a universal phenomenon in biology.’

In other words, we ‘sync’ with the fields around us, whether they’re good for us or not.

And it’s not just humans that are affected. It affects the wider environmental landscape as well. ‘At present, anthropogenic electromagnetic radiation is a serious problem in electromagnetic ecology,’ the authors say.

So, what can be done?

Nevoit’s team has suggestions. ‘Such measures as re-evaluation of the biological impact of Extremely Low Frequency and Wireless Communication Electromagnetic Fields, classification of them as probably carcinogenic (Group 2A) or carcinogenic (Group 1) for humans, tightening of electromagnetic safety standards and requirements in places of human habitation, a moratorium on further deployment of 5G, urgent application of the precautionary principle, stricter exposure limits, especially for Wireless Communication Electromagnetic Fields are necessary.’
